Action Teams

ICE Breakers

Goal

Resist ICE’s lawlessness and push political and industry leaders to limit their access and operations in Massachusetts (and beyond!)  Facilitate participation by Activist Evenings members in non-violent actions that counter and limit the power of this agency.

Accomplishments

  1. We were active in the Stop Avelo campaign and continue to be active in the De-ICE Hanscom movement. We have organized public comment and rallied consistent and impressive attendance at public meetings of the Hanscom Field Advisory Commission and MassPort.  Governor Healey issued executive orders in December and January calling for limits on ICE detention flights, and we believe that this was in response to increasing pressure from our coalition of Indivisible groups. We joined the Stop Avelo protest at the Manchester Regional Airport in November—part of a nation-wide campaign—and were delighted when Avelo announced that they would cease to run charter flights for ICE.

  2. We launched the De-ICE Citizens campaign in Brookline, and have hosted two protests weekly since November at the Coolidge Corner bank branch. Members of our group are part of the De-ICE Citizens coordinating committee that is planning actions across the region and interstate.  There was a coordinated day of protest on January 24, and another is planned for March 7. We have gained local community recognition/support, with coverage in the Brookline.News. We had a rep from Markey's office attend a recent standout, and are exploring, with Coalition support, inviting local and state reps to future standouts.  We have connected with other local groups doing standouts in JP and Roslindale to share best practices, messaging, etc.

  3. We stood in solidarity with Minnesota, organizing a stand out at Brookline’s Target on February 11 in conjunction with a nationwide action.

  4. We organized carpooling to Merrimack, NH, to join a wider protest against a proposed ICE detention center.  The proposal has now been cancelled!

Supporting Caregivers

Goal

The overall mission of this group is to protect caregivers and other support workers both in senior living communities and childcare centers in the event of ICE activity. To date, the focus has been on Brookline, but the team would be happy to share materials and lessons learned with other childcare facilities and senior living communities upon request.

Accomplishments

  1. About 50 residents of a senior living community in Brookline attended a Know Your Rights Bystander presentation arranged by the team in December.

  2. The group has developed materials with information childcare centers can use to develop safety protocols in the event of ICE activity in the area.

  3. The work with Brookline childcare centers is now complete.

Workplace Outreach

Goal

Assist businesses in preparation for ICE raids.

Accomplishments

  1. The Workplace Outreach Group, (an Activist Evenings action subcommittee) in conjunction with the Town of Brookline Immigrant Advancement Committee has been providing resources to Brookline businesses to help them prepare for potential ICE activity/raids against their employees. To date, these resources have been distributed door to door to over 140 Brookline businesses. The resources (attached below in one pdf)
    include:

    • Literature spelling out steps owners can take with their employees to prepare for a possible raid.

    • Signage to designate a protected, employee-only area.

    • Posters that describe the legal rights of businesses and employees during a raid and how to reduce harm and deescalate the situation.

    • Poster with information about the LUCE Immigrant Justice Network, ICE Alert Hotline 617-370-5023.

  2. The response to this effort has been overwhelmingly positive with managers and employees thanking us for taking the time to provide them with the information and some expressing their personal concerns for the current situation.

  3. Additionally, several members of the subcommittee met with the Director of the Brookline Chamber of Commerce an article outlining the work of the sub-committee and the resources were included in their weekly newsletter that is distributed by email to 2400 individuals and businesses.

  4. The subcommittee also reached out to MIRA to verify that the Town has a written policy on not providing immigrant status information to ICE. View the Town’s written policy.
